RAINER BAUMANN was born in 1949 in a small town in the Black Forest - in South-Germany and raised up in Hamburg. He is working as a guitarist, composer, songwriter, musicteacher and author. His parents used to listen to a lot of music, just like Elvis Presley, Mahelia Jackson, Louis Armstrong and on the other hand to classical music and singer, like Mario Lanza and Maria Callas. In the age of 11 he started playing the guitar and when he was 16 he founded his first band, together with his brother and three mates (Uwe Wegner - rhythm-guit., Wolfgang Pohl - bass and Guenter Remer on drums). The band called "Barrelhouse Bluesband". Two years later (1969) the famous trio "Sphinx Tush" was founded with Zabba Lindner on drums and Andreas Smietana on bass. Their music was something like early punkmusic, long before punk was getting popular. They used to play in the biggest hall of the town (Ernst-Merck-Halle), where groups like the „Rolling Stones“ used to play. They have played at the last evening of the well known Star-Club in St. Pauli (thats where the Beatles started) and they've done many live-performances at the radiostation NDR. At the end of 1971 Baumann has joint Germany's most succesful band called "Frumpy" (with girlsinger Inga Rumpf on vocals). They where touring from Norway to Switzerland. Frumpy released four very succesful albums and in 1972 they where quotet as the best band in Germany. Baumann won the pop poll as the best guitarplayer of the year. After leaving Frumpy because of musical differences, Baumann got his own band together, the "Rainer Baumann Band". Over the years a lot of good musicians was working in his band. In this time, he recorded several albums and did sessions with musicians like Jack Bruce, Champion Jack Dupree, Roger Chapman, Alexis Korner, Eric Burdon. Baumann started to study music and classical guitar in the year of 1973. After that he begins -beside his bandprojects- as a teacher for music in the "Hochschule für Musik" in Hamburg. He did a lot of guitar-workshops around Germany and still doing it. Baumann also arranged classical music for the classical-guitar. As a result of teaching popular music, he wrote a book about the special harmonic situations in rock-music ("Rock-Harmonielehre"), a scale-book for the guitar and now (2001) he has released two volumes of: "The language of the Rock-and Bluesguitar" . 1995: 25th anniversary of beeing on stage. A big concert in Hamburg with a lot of well known musicians, like i. e. Jack Bruce.
